A Craft Born from Humble Beginnings

The story of Gloria Investments began in the early 1970s with Issa J Musleh.

Working alongside his father, Issa spent many long days and nights developing his skills in carving small pieces of olive wood. Through dedication and experience, he excelled in the traditional olive wood industry for which the Bethlehem region has become so well known.

What began with the work of a father and son would eventually grow into something much larger.

Driven by a desire to establish fair trade opportunities for others, Issa expanded his work and founded Gloria Investments, developing wholesale and retail services within the olive wood industry.

His craftsmanship had become not simply a livelihood, but an opportunity to help other families and workshops participate in a wider market.

Supporting Christian Families in Bethlehem

Since 2008, Gloria Investments has worked and cooperated with approximately 65 olive wood workshops.

These workshops belong mainly to Christian families in Bethlehem, providing an important connection between traditional craftsmanship and sustainable income opportunities.

This is especially significant because Palestinian Christians are a minority community in the region. Supporting Christian artisans and their families helps provide opportunities for them to continue working within their local communities while preserving a craft that has been handed down through generations.

Gloria Investments has sought to strengthen and develop the olive wood industry while remaining committed to supporting the local Christian community.

As part of this work, it has also expanded opportunities for participating workshops and increased fair trade initiatives by importing accessories for artisans at fair prices.

From the Heart of Beit Sahour

Gloria Investments is located in Beit Sahour, Palestine, just metres from Shepherds’ Field.

For Christians, this location carries extraordinary significance.

It was in the fields around Bethlehem that shepherds were watching their flocks when the angel announced the birth of Jesus:

“Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” (Luke 2:11)

The shepherds hurried to Bethlehem to find Mary, Joseph and the infant Jesus.

Today, only a short distance from the place traditionally associated with that biblical event, Christian artisans continue to work with their hands, creating religious pieces that travel from Bethlehem into Christian homes, churches and communities around the world.
